India CT Market: Private-Led Growth and Regional Demand Acceleration
India’s CT market is expanding under rising pressure from trauma, stroke, oncology, and emergency care. National initiatives, such as Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri–Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), and the strengthening of district hospitals are driving higher imaging expectations in secondary as well as tertiary networks. Rising Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) burdens and increasing accident-related injuries make rapid CT access essential for both early diagnosis as well as improved survival outcomes across states.
As per Hospital Intel Suite (HiS), India’s CT landscape is dominated by private healthcare. In several states, private hospitals hold a share more than seven times that of the public sector. This results in a system where most routine and emergency CT services are provided outside government facilities. Regional disparities are considerable. Southern and western states maintain far higher CT penetration than the northeastern and central regions. Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra together account for a far greater share of national capacity than the eastern and northeastern states combined. Secondary hospitals form the backbone of CT distribution nationwide, while tertiary centers concentrate the most advanced scanners in high-income metropolitan corridors.
Market opportunity grows in states where emergency demand now surpasses CT availability. Northeastern and central districts exhibit the widest gaps, presenting strong potential for first-time CT installations and Public Private Partnership-led expansion under state health missions. Urban tertiary hospitals prioritize replacement cycles focused on faster stroke protocols, cardiac CT, and dose-optimized oncology imaging. Secondary hospitals require durable mid-range systems suited to heavy daily volumes. Vendors that offer scalable platforms, AI-supported reconstruction tools, and uptime-focused service models will be best positioned to capture growth as India modernizes CT access across all tiers of care.
